Modern War September 18, 2011
I don’t think any single player could experience the entire scope of the operation on Sunday, but most of what I saw was very impressive. I must admit that I was skeptical about how well things would go. The list of objectives seemed long and complicated and I wasn’t sure how Ambush would facilitate the day. But all day long I was continually impressed with the staff.
- There was always a ref on hand to answer questions. If that ref didn’t know, they were all linked via radio and able to get the answer asap.
- I’d like to point out that Noah, the ref at the orange POW trailer, was very diligent in keeping score and helping players as best he could. Donovan and Woody seemed to be the two guys running the show on a high level and did a great job from what I could tell.
- I very much liked the idea of resetting stretchers, cases, ammo, etc throughout the day. Again, Ambush staff worked non-stop to make sure the game never went stale.
- The addition of an exit to the chrono station is greatly appreciated. It’s also an example of how Denny is listening to player suggestions and is working hard to satisfy his customers.
Did anyone else know there was going to be a vendor there? I’m curious how many more people would have bought stuff if they’d have known to bring money. And I wasn’t expecting the expanded store so quickly. Denny had mentioned it before but I wasn’t expecting it until next season.
Gripes:
- I have to say I struggled to stay in a positive mood throughout the day. There was a lot of good throughout the day, but whenever I started to get a smile on my face something ugly would wipe it away.
- The volume of people meant a shortage of table space. I know we’re not entitled to our little corner, but it was still irksome to find strangers had taken over our spot.
- There were several instances of close proximity shooting and blind firing and such before it occurred to me that none of the safety briefing information was conveyed when Denny was announcing the objectives. Whoops.
- The level of honesty has improved with every walk on day at Ambush to the point where I only occasionally hear of cheating and haven’t seen it for myself in a long time. In comparison, Sunday was a huge disappointment.
- I personally witnessed two players screaming obscenities at each other and heard of at least one other altercation. No matter who was right or who was wrong, it’s always a downer for other players trying to have fun.
Weighing the pros and the cons, I’d give the day a 65/35 for the better. My favorite aspect was the diversity in play. If you wanted to be in the thick of it, you could join in the huge battle for the castle. There was open field play, woods play, and lots of opportunity for team or solo work. I personally preferred the small skirmishes in the woods east of the castle. The area around the camper field and the tunnel was usually only sparsely populated. The small fireteam-on-fireteam action over a large area made for some great stalking. I’m certainly looking forward to the next Op.
What did you think of Modern War? Highlights? Suggestions? Inquiring minds want to know.
I have to agree with Heathen on all accounts.
Denny and his staff did an exceptional job with all things that they could control.I too, missed the "Safety briefing",realizing this also, after the game started..But I also understand the huge scope of what was going on.That indeed was an "oops" if there were first timers on the field. We know the safety rules because we are present thru all our previous outings.First timers missed this.
My biggest disappointment was from the minority of players on both sides who were quick to accuse others of cheating and some confrontational attitudes,as well as those who did not call their hits (both teams). When you have that many people competing in such a fast paced sport that is open to the general population, this is to be expected. In this case patience is indeed a virtue.I interceded in a potentially harmful confrontation (and I have it recorded on my helmet cam). After talking this individual down,an understanding was reached and all involved parted on friendly terms. My advice:stay calm, and do NOT use confrontational language.Let them know we are all trying to enjoy this sport. Those who cheat will be called out eventually, even by their own team-mates.
I also have footage of another person Fully removing his mask on 3 separate occasions, each time I told him about this and he summarily rejected my advice to replace his mask till he was finished with what he was doing. He was also on one of the regular teams that frequent Ambush.I am debating whether I should bring this footage to Denny and/or his team.Regardless,I will tell Denny about these incidents.
I have to wonder if Denny would be open to an invitation only "Scenario Day".I don't know how it could be done tho.I'm from the old school paintball days where there was a more intimate group of people and we all knew each other and that ingrained more respect for each other and the rules.
Overall,my son and I had a great time. There was plenty of action and diversity in how one could attain the objectives using their own style of play. There were MANY more positives than negatives (95% fun -5% bummers) and we will be going to the next scenario day.
Denny and his staff did do an excellent job at trying to keep order on all that was going on. I liked how there were multiple objectives to keep people busy and it didn't turn into a spawn camp fest (well there was a couple attempts).
I was happy to see that there were people policing their own team also. After I watched a kid I shot out walk around the castle and come out firing from the side door 20 seconds latter I was glad one of his own team called him out and told him to walk to the re-spawn.
As far as dishonesty I will say that it was affecting almost everyone. I saw people I never thought id see angry loosing their tempers.I'll be the first to admit...I lost my temper. But when a player calls himself out, raises his gun then walks 3 feet drops to his knee and opens full auto on you...then his friends start cursing you out because you wont call yourself out (after a dead walking player shoots you)..who wouldn't get confrontational?
I would like to see another big battle day but I would like to see a better scoring system.
Denny and staff put on a robust game for us to enjoy. This was their first big airsoft game and I think the did a great job.
As far as game play goes, we've had better sportsmanship with more players in attendance on walk-on days. Every big game I've attended has had the same issues.
I too agree that Denny and his staff did an excellent job with the event. As far as scoring went the ref at the main fort did a good job there was a few time he looked a bit overwhelmed between scoring and assisting other players
As far as dishonesty goes I only saw a few times when player were not calling hit, some of the other thing that were mentioned I did not see. I spent most of my day around the smaller field near the main fort area and did not get to the castle or the wooded areas much.
As with many of the fast paced there will always be players that let their tempers get away from them a bit.I myself was involved in a incident that i am not proud of and to those who where there and read this forum I apologize
I took the some time and looked back on the day and how things were handled and although there where a few incidences between players with all that was going on and the number of players that attended for the most part i think everything went pretty well.I could only think of a few suggestions that may help in the future .
I look forward to the next scenario day
I thought the day was a great success. With all the different objectives it made for much more diversified action and tactics(not just storm the castle all day).
If the guy having the problem of removing his facemask is who I believe it is the problem has been solved and he will not be joining us at ambush anymore. And Tanker I feel your pain of being shot by the dead(on atleast two seperate occassions).
Can't wait for the next Op, and maybe a night game or two.
